Watch the recording of our final webinar in the series Exploring Contemporary Issues through Global Citizenship Education, titled “Resistance to Imperialism”. The session explored how imperialism continues to shape global inequalities, with reflections on resistance across local and global contexts, from Minneapolis to the Sahel and Lebanon. Speakers were Jey Ehrenhalt, a Minneapolis-based writer focused on social justice education; Mikaela Nhondo Erskog, a researcher and editor at Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research and co-coordinator of its Pan-Africa office; and Hussein Assaf, a Beirut-based journalist, writer, and editor-in-chief of Vocal Politics. The session was moderated by Leigh Brady, Policy and Advocacy Manager, and highlighted the importance of understanding and responding to ongoing struggles for justice and liberation worldwide.

The webinar explored the growing global demand for critical minerals and its links to extraction, environmental, and human rights injustices, emphasising the importance of critical engagement through GCE. 

Speakers were, V’cenze Cirefice, Communities Against the Injustice of Mining (CAIM), Lynda O’Sullivan, Co-coordinator, Yes to Life No to MIning (YLNM), and Lydia Moyo from Action for Southern Africa (ACTSA), representing Cornelius Mumba Katiti, Zambian environmental activist. 

 Our Moderator was Lizzy Noone, IDEA’s Capacity Development Manager.

Speakers included Giorgia Gusciglio, Europe Co-Coordinator for BDS Campaigns at the Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC), the largest coalition of Palestinian society leading the global BDS movement. Emma Jayne Geraghty, Head of Movement Building at Friends of the Earth Ireland, and Vicky Donnelly, who was accompanied by John Griffin and Frank Naughton from Kinvara Action Group.

Together, they shared insights on Apartheid Free Zones as we explored this key action area of Global Citizenship Education, highlighting the impact and challenges of these initiatives from local to global contexts.

The event was hosted by Valery Molay, a climate and racial justice policy expert and activist.

IDEA and Ubuntu held their second edition of our Global Citizenship Education (GCE) Research Showcase on Monday 25 November, online. This event showcases contemporary GCE research with thought-provoking and engaging inputs. For the purpose of this event, the term research will be taken in its broadest sense, encompassing academic research; action research; documented practice; documented learning; conceptual research articles; case studies etc.

IDEA collaborated with Comhlámh to host a webinar on ‘Social Inclusion in Times of Rising Xenophobia’ #4 on our webinar series: Exploring Contemporary Crises and Issues through Global Citizenship Education on Wednesday, 15 May. Dr Caroline Murphy, CEO of Comhlámh, moderated this session. Speakers were Joe Munnelly, who holds PhD in Humanitarian and Development studies graduating from UCD’s Centre for Humanitarian Action; Bulelani Mfaco, Spokesperson for the Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland (MASI); and Sarah Kelleher, CEO of Lourdes Youth & Community Services (LYCS). This webinar explored the existing gap in Ireland of refugee and migrant integration, resettlement, and community engagement in Ireland

We hosted the second session in our webinar series, Exploring Contemporary Crises and Issues through Global Citizenship Education, entitled ‘The Age of Cascading Crises’ online via Zoom on Tuesday, 09 April. Moderated by Lizzy Noone from WorldWide Global Schools with inputs from Dr Aoife Titley and Patrick Marren, both from Maynooth University, it aims to strengthen the capacity to engage as educators to understand the connections between these crises and also increase their confidence to address them in educational settings. This video resource will provide a valuable ‘taster’ for anyone considering registering for the Certificate in Maynooth to hear from two lecturers involved.
